Summary, etc Pandit Godabarish Mishra was born on 27 October 1886 in Srinibaspur sasan near Banapur in present Khordha district to Lingaraj Mishra & Apsara Devi Mishra. They were very poor who struggled to educate their son. He completed his primary education in his village school and went to Puri District School where he completed his entrance examination in 1906. Then he was enrolled in Ravenshaw College. He completed his BA in Philosophy in 1910 and obtained his M.A. in Economics from University of Calcutta in 1912.When he was a student in Puri High School those were eventful for him in many respects which aroused his patriotism and anti-British sentiment. He was a student of Chandramohan Maharana, the headmaster of Puri High School whose character inspired him very much. There he was introduced to Sashibhusan Roychaudhury, a revolutionary terrorist having links with the Jugantar group who became very close to Godavarish and many other Odia students who were inspired by his commitment to the freedom struggle. He was also inspired by Gopabandhu Das’ commitment to the nation. When he was a postgraduate student at Calcutta University, Sashibhusan introduced him to many more revolutionary leaders who worked secretly to manufacture bombs or assassinate selective English officials. Though Godavarish had contact with them he did not actively participate in their activities. It was limited to attending their meetings, transmitting messages, teaching in evening classes, and nursing the injured. After completing his post-graduation he came to Satyabadi in 1913 to join the National School started by Gopabandhu Das there. When Satyabadi became the epicenter of the non-cooperation movement, Godavarish by the order of Gopabandhu came to Chakradharpur to open and run a national school and lead the non-cooperation movement there in 1920. Since Singhbhoom was an Odia majority district, his activities were responded to well by the local people. They donated him handsomely to the cause of the Chakradharpur High School which became a national school. There he moved from village to village with local volunteers to spread the message of non-cooperation and Mahatma Gandhi who responded to him well. After the suspension of the non-cooperation movement, he returned to his native village Banpur where he found that the awareness about the freedom struggle, non-cooperation movement under Gandhian leadership, and constructive programs of Congress like charkha and khadi had not reached the core section of the population of that area. Since non-cooperation was suspended, Godavarish, therefore, chose Banapur as the center of his activities for a constructive program of Congress. He formed a cooperative society to encourage farmers to adopt scientific farming on about 100 acres of land. He also trained some students in weaving and spinning which made them self-dependent. He also founded a matchbox factory where some people were employed. When Mahatma Gandhi visited Banpur in 1927, he became a guest of Godavarish Mishra and was impressed by his activities which he mentioned in ‘Young India’. But these activities were under the scan of the police who arrested Godavarish on charges of spreading anti-government messages. The cooperative society was therefore broken. He was a member of the Bihar Orissa Legislative Council from 1924 to 1937. After the resignation of the Congress ministry in Odisha in 1939, a non-congress ministry under Krushnachandra Gajapati was formed in which Godavarish was the Minister for Finance and Education in whose initiative the groundwork for Utkal University and Highcourt of Orissa was started. He was also an eminent poet, short story writer, and novelist whose creative works have special spaces in Odia literature. He passed away in 1957.
